Words From the Cross – Day 15

Crown_Logo_FINALDay 15 – A Word of Compassion

John 19:26-27 “[Jesus] said to His mother, ‘Dear woman, here is your son, and to the disciple, ‘Here is your mother.’”

Matt 9:36 “When He saw the crowds He had compassion on them because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.”

People around the world for centuries have found comfort from the 23rd Psalm “The LORD is my shepherd. I shall not be in want. He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life. And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.”

Sheep are completely dependent on the shepherd for everything. John 10:1-18 describes Jesus as our Good Shepherd. When we follow Him, we can be assured of His protection, guidance and loving care. We the sheep follow our Shepherd who guides us to green pastures and still waters.

John 10:11 says, “I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.” And verse 14 –15 says, “I am the Good Shepherd; I know My sheep and My sheep know Me— just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father—and I lay down My life for the sheep.“ In this passage Jesus talks about the hired hand who cares nothing for the sheep and will run away instead of risk his life to save his sheep. In contrast, Jesus says that He lays down His life only to take it up again. No one takes it from Him but He laid it down of His own accord. (verses 17-18).

Jesus’ death and resurrection as part of God’s plan for the salvation of the world were part of Triune God’s plan for mankind from the very beginning.  Jesus willingly gave up His life for His sheep and became the Sacrificial Lamb on our behalf.

Prayer: Lord, what comfort I have knowing that You are my Shepherd that knows me personally and that is always watching out for me and caring for me. Words are so inadequate, but thank You so much! Amen.
